DOMENIC MARIANO - OBITUARY
August 16, 1925 - February 6, 2018
Domenic Mariano, 92, of Andover, died Tuesday, February 6, at Lawrence General Hospital.
Domenic was born in Lawrence, Mass., on August 16, 1925, to the late Vincenzo and Marietta (Dappalonia) Mariano.
He attended Lawrence schools. At the age of 18, he was drafted into the Army during WWII, where he served as a Light Weapons Machine Gunner for Company B of the 46th Armored Infantry Regiment.
He was a decorated veteran earning five battle stars for the battles he fought in Normandy, Rhineland, and Ardennes. He fought in one of WWII's toughest fights in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest, in Germany where he was wounded. He received a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his bravery during that battle for carrying a fellow wounded soldier one-and-a-half miles to safety, while he was wounded himself.
He was featured in a documentary, Battle of the Bulge, filmed by Larry Cappetto, and was included in the book "The Heroes Among Us," by Jack Mitchell, about WWII. After the war, he returned to his family in Methuen.
He was employed by Grieco Brothers Clothing, in Lawrence, as a presser until his retirement.
Domenic was known to many as a determined, dedicated, kind, and humble man, who was committed to his family, and his Catholic faith. In his spare time, Domenic enjoyed spending time with his family, and his fellow Veterans, listening to classical music, and painting houses. His favorite thing to do was to go on long road trips with his wife finding wonderful restaurants and attractions as they explored the United States, the country he loved and fought for.
The widower of the late Mary (Tombarelli) Mariano, he is survived by his brother, John Mariano, and his wife, Rose, of Methuen; and his sister-in-law, Anna Mariano; as well as several nieces and nephews.
